The kids get a chance to shine and we all get an opportunity to represent the Arizona Budokan in one of the biggest traditional martial arts tournaments in the Phoenix area. We always do well, and this year was no exception. Congratulations to everyone who trained hard and gave their best effort in a challenging environment. As Kobayashi-sensei said, there are very few people left who have firsthand memories of training with Kuniba-sensei in Japan, giving these two old masters a very special and lasting bond.

Another dear friend and kohai that Shihan was able to visit in Osaka was Shigeki Uemura-sensei. Uemura-sensei was just a boy when Shihan first came to Japan, but his father was also an outstanding martial artist who had already trained closely with Hayashi-sensei for years when Shihan arrived. Shihan was lucky enough to train under Uemura-sensei's father, and he also served as a special sempai for the young Shigeki as he grew up surrounded by the world of Hayashi-ha karate.

Shihan with Uemura-sensei Sr. in 1969 (top) and 1980 (bottom)

Sadly, Uemura-sensei Sr. died just before Shihan's trip to Japan. However, he was honored to have an opportunity to speak to him during his final hours and tell him how much he meant to him as a sensei and a friend. In addition, Shihan was also able to pay his final respects to him at a beautiful altar that Shigeki-sensei had set up in his dojo to honor his father's passing.

Like with Kobayashi-sensei, time constraints did not allow Shihan to train with Uemura-sensei while we were in Osaka, but the two spent a wonderful day together catching up, reconnecting, and reliving old memories. One of Shihan's favorite memories of Uemura-sensei is teaching him kobudo in the street outside his house back in 1979.

Shihan and Uemura-sensei practice kobudo in the street as passersby look on at the sight

Shihan also brought with him a photobook commemorating Hayashi-sensei's life, and the two spent hours poring over it and talking about the past and future of Hayashi-ha karate. Uemura-sensei and Shihan share a special bond in that they were both taken under Hayashi-sensei's wing not just as students, but almost as sons. If Hashimoto-sensei and Shihan are like brothers in their philosophy and approach to budo, it was clear that Uemura-sensei and Shihan are brothers in their feelings of love, respect, and gratitude towards the great Teruo Hayashi.

Shihan and Uemura-sensei pore over photographs and share stories of their late teachers

Uemura-sensei toasts his beloved sempai and brother in Hayashi-ha karate

Today, Uemura-sensei has taken his place as an outstanding and internationally known martial artist in his own right. Hanshi Merriman gave us plenty of time to practice the kata so that we would be familiar with it when it was time to move to bunkai application.

Practicing Geki Sai Dai Ichi

Finally, it was time for the in-line renzoku (continuous) bunkai application. Though we typically limit our bunkai practice to one opponent (direction) at a time, Hanshi Merriman taught us how to perform the entire kata in a straight line so that we could bunkai the entire thing without stopping using only one partner. It was definitely challenging, but a whole lot of fun!

Sensei Jerry and Sempai Dawn work renzoku bunkai
with guidance from Hanshi Merriman

Sensei DeNado (far right) also helped us with the new exercise

Everyone came away from the seminar energized and full of new knowledge. We can't wait to practice these concepts further and try to apply them to some of our other kata as well. The summer games are usually smaller than the winter games, and this year was no exception. Still, we had few troopers who went out and did a great job representing Shihan and the Arizona Budokan again this year. As always, the instructor team worked hard to get us ready for the tournament as well.

We're especially proud of Alan, who went out and competed in long weapons and in a huge kata division after only having trained with us for a couple of months. Like our Shihan, Shihan Murayama is a second-generation student to the founder of Shito-ryu, Kenwa Mabuni, and he is famous as one of the top Shito-ryu practitioners in the world.

Sensei Murayama on the cover of Masters Magazine in 2009

The seminar was a great opportunity to train with some of our martial arts "cousins" in the Shito Kai organization and compare some of the subtle differences between what they do and what we do. Murayama Sensei spent the first half of the seminar going over some interesting and very effective (ouch!!) grappling applications.

Sensei Murayama demonstrating a takedown

Murayama Sensei stressed tight, circular movements as a way to retain control of the opponent and increase the effectiveness of the technique. For example, he showed us how to add a subtle twist to this familiar arm bar in order to make it more powerful.

Sensei Murayama with Shihan, demonstrating an arm bar

As always, we were given the opportunity to work with other karateka outside of our dojo, helping us to broaden our ability to apply different techniques. In this case, almost everyone at the seminar was a Shito-ryu practitioner, but we still saw a lot of small differences, particularly when we did kata during the second half of the seminar.

Sempai Dawn working with a brown belt from another dojo

All in all it was a great experience, and those that attended were able to take home some new information as well as reinforce applications that we often do in our own dojo. A special thanks to Sensei Rabino for hosting Sensei Murayama and allowing us to attend. I also hope that the redesigned site will give students both old and new a fresh look at our amazingly rich history and tradition--along with all of the other reasons we are considered the premiere traditional martial arts training facility in the Valley.

It has been an honor to train with Shihan Crosswell and our other incredible instructors for the last two and a half years. I believe we have something truly special and unique at our school and it is deeply rewarding to finally be able to shout it out to our dojo family and to the world.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and design magic of my lifelong friend Kevin Carr at Sideways Eight Productions, who has overseen all of the artistic and technical aspects of the site. The result so far is even more beautiful and functional than I had dared hope--and over the next six months or so, it's only going to get better.

I'd also like to thank Shihan Crosswell and all of the kids, parents, students, and instructors at Arizona Budokan for providing me with great feedback on their experiences as well as ideas and pictures for the website.

Please keep checking back and please do contact me with any feedback or suggestions you might have--either in person or by email. Thanks again for being a part of our amazing dojo family--and if you're new to the Arizona Budokan, please stop by and visit soon. We can't wait to meet you!

Dawn

Welcome to our blog

A quick hello from the web and social media developer for azbudokan.com! I'm proud to be working with Shihan Crosswell and Dawn Croft to relaunch the website.

A total redesign of the site is under way, both aesthetically and technically. The rich content from the current site will be retained and enhanced - including the addition of videos, lots of photographs and a more detailed look into the arts, their histories and the proud lineage of the Dojo. The header for this blog is a little clue as to how the site is evolving. We will be announcing some launch dates in the next week!

This blog will be the future home of the day to day events of the Dojo. We will be posting announcements for special seminars, demonstrations and promotions. I am hoping that eventually, Shihan Crosswell will be posting as well!

I'm also going to jump the gun and introduce the woman I am proud to call my friend and most likely the primary blogger - Dawn Croft. Dawn posses a rich martial arts background in many arts and has studied around the world. She has been studying at the Arizona Budokan since August of 2008 - if memory serves me. And she's been my friend for over 17 years.
